Kurt and Gerdtrude (Trudle) Binner immigrated to Chicago, Illinois from Germany before the war.  Kurt, my grandfather took his pastry skills and apprenticed as a pastry chef at the Palmer House.  After years of service, they opened a bakery on the southeast suburbs called  Maiers Bakery.  It was in prime location next to the Homewood-Flossmoor train station.

It was a full-service bakery using only quality ingredients . Customers  were greeted warmly by their first names, and their children were allowed to pick out “penny candy” in brown paper sacks  as their parents ordered their freshly made baked goods.  The bakery was a convenient “stop over” for the commuters traveling into or going home from the city.   After 50 years of service,  Kurt and Trudle sold the bakery and headed for retirement.

 I loved those “bakery” days and longed to open a bakery of my own.  Cooking and baking good food, as well as, providing  helpful service seemed to energize me and I found this to be my passion.  To ensure quality, I use only fresh ingredients and prepare the baked goods and dishes from scratch, as you would, if time allowed.
